Tales From The Dark Corner:
Documenting the Oral Tradition
Sponsored by Limestone College, Gaffney, S.C., and The South Carolina Committee for the Humanities.
Funded in part by The South Carlina Committee for the Humanities, a state-based agent of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The project
...is an effort to preserve the rich folklore of that area of northeastern Greenville County, South Carolina, referred to as the Dark Corner. The region is known for its moonshine stills and scenic mountains, and its people are characterized by a mountaineer's independence and by their reverence for family, land and God.
The tales of the Dark Corner are to be presented in lectures to audiences across the state and in Washington, D.C., and physical results of the project - transcripts of interviews with 39 residents of Dark Corner and copies of slides and photos - are to be retained by a number of institutes, including the National Archives, Washington D.C., plus several South Carolina libraries and archives.
Research was gathered during the summer of 1983. Dr. Bernard Zaidman, professor of English at Limestone College, Gaffney, S.C., is project Director. Photos and slides were taken by David Green, of Spartanburg, S.C. Other staff members include Dean S. Campbell, Blue Ridge, S.C., ombudsman; Dr. Ann Sharpe, Furman University, dialectologist; Lisa Kling, Gaffney, S.C., storyteller; Janet DuBois, Limestone College, transcriptionist; and Norman Belk, Greenville, S.C., librarian. - Relation
