March. 27-45
Germany
Dear Mama, Daddy + All,
Hope you all are just fine, I'm getting along all right. I can't tell you where I am but. I don't think it will be so bad, at least, not as bad as it could have been. The country is really pretty, wish you all could see it. Their farms are much neater and the plowing looks better than what I used to do. Guess I'll have to take a few lessons from them. The reason I hadn't written in several days is that they had more mail than they could censor, I don't know when I'll get to turn this one in. I received two letters from you, sure was glad to get them. Did you get all the money I sent, you didn't say. There was $45 in all, part in one letter and part in another.
The French aren't so very much different from us. They aren't as large and the language is strange. Tell Dick if he were here he could really have a bunch of kids follow him. You know how Walker and Boyd used to go with him.
I got 17 letters and an Easter card at one time, had one from Bill, he is still doing O.K. I'm writing this on a train, hope you can read it. Wish you all could see this country, there are sections that haven't been touched by the war. Have see two or three pretty girls but can't talk to them, wish I had took French in school. I hope the peach crop wasn't killed and you can really make a good crop this year. I saw a white house yesterday, she was just like yours.
I didn't stay very long in Spartanburg, would like to have seen Uncle Bill but was afraid I'd miss the train. There are several boys from Charlotte, N.C. here, hope we get to stay to-gether.
Mama, don't you all worry about me, war isn't as bad as people say it is, they tell only the bad parts, and leave out the good times they have. I can take care of myself and will be coming home again before you know it.
The flowers are blooming and fruit tree are too. I've seen quite a few peach trees in full bloom, didn't think I'd get to see any this year but I did.
I write a few lines every-time the train stops, may get to finish sometime.
This is an experience I'll always remember, was sort of disgusted on the ship but seeing this country has helped a lot. If I could see you all once in a-while I'd really enjoy this war. I may be able to tell you what Army I'm in, if I can I'll write that later. Wish I had landed in England, so I could have seen Bill.
Well, I'll close for now, write all you can and I'll do the same. Tell all hello.
Lots of Love to All,
Bob
send me some air mail stamps, they are hard to get here.
Love
Bob.
