Sterilization
What would happen if a more advanced life form dedicated to sterilize Earth by destroying all imperfect biological units?
The man woke from his deep sleep. He immediately looked at his surroundings. Yes, he was familiar with this room; and yet he was feeling confused and disoriented.
He blinked his eyes and tried to remember how long he had been asleep. It was no use; he couldn't remember. Questions filled his mind, causing him to forget himself momentarily.
Pushing the tumult of questions from his mind, he wondered if he could move. He tried to move a finger; the effort seemed to wear him out. But after a few seconds-which seemed like hours- his fingers moved. He relaxed again and decided to wait awhile before he attempted to get up,
The man opened his eyes (paper damaged here) he didn't know how much time had passed since he had tried to move. He had lost his se (paper damaged here) f time.
A memory stirred his mind, a memory of waking in the early morning and listening to a chorus of birds. Instinctively, he listened for a sound-any sound. There was none; his world was filled with absolute silence. The man wondered-just a passing thought- if he was deaf of if indeed no sounds existed.
The man rose with great effort that drained all of his strength. But once standing, he found it easy to propel himself.
Outside, the man found his world illuminated by a strange orange glow. He looked around trying to find its origin. Then he spotted the alien object. He had never seen anything like it before.
As he began to approach the alien, a warning flashed through his brain as if sent there by another source. From this message, he knew approach the alien would mean certain death. Although he wasn't aware of the wish, in his mind the man had already decided on death. He knew somehow that he was the omega man-the last survivor. And he wanted death, in fact, craved it.
As he walked toward the alien, he thought of his world. And then in a flash, what took millions and millions of years to create was gone.
The Earth was alone again-without her weak companions. She was pure, free of all biological imperfections.

Philosophy
The least of my fears
is that of being unloved.
For when humans
no longer love me, still
I love and preserve myself.
And if I should hate
myself, still God will
care for me.
No, my greatest fear
is that of being unable to love.
Love is selfness.
Not loving is selfishness.
If I do not love,
I am unhappy- and alone.
Happiness in me
lies first in loving-
and last in being loved.
Lisa Adams
Love:
That tide which overwhelms
when it first envelops us;
Refreshes us for a moment,
an eternity of fantasy;
Deludes us when it
ebbs and disappears.

The Human Junkyard
The old junkyard clusters the old man's acreage. across from the new high school. Ironically, each day a selected car goes up into flames in order to make room for another. Yet, the old man refuses to give up his hobby, his so-called occupation, even though he is offered more than his whole life's earnings.
Unusual comparison I guess--but there are human junkyards also. Society seems to waste itself and end- piled in the junkyard, waiting for its turn to be burned, even when given the knowledge, the chance to decide, to refuse, to turn away. Alcohol, drugs, hatred, contempt, and all the other man-made problems eventually destroy mankind himself- the human junkyard.

Hands in Time
It is strange to see the way I stand in time.
In one hand I hold stone stools, hides, fire and horses.
I have learned the virtue of these things and ways.
Many are good though they be
Slow, trying and painful;
Yet they are quiet and unhurried,
Turning with the seasons.
In the other hand I hold atoms, lasers, oil and rockets
And faster ways,
Which are not always better.
Sickness is less;
Yet, man must think of more ways to kill.
The seasons still turn,
Though seldom felt,
As heaters and air conditioners
Blow their opposite season blasts.
And the old ways disappear
Like blossoms dropped by playing children,
To wither and be lost forever.
For there is a better way today,
And there will be an even better way tomorrow.
One small person spans a great deal of time,
With one hand in the past,
The other in the present, reaching
For the future,
It is strange to see how my hands are held in time.

No Flowers Please
I want no flowers on my grave,
Perhaps you wonder why:
Embarrassment I thus would save to
Friends without means to buy.
Flowers are lovely to be sure
But soon they wither away.
Cut flowers will not long endure
No matter how fine the spray.
I wish my children dear may place
In love one simple wreath;
O're my casket, above my face,
Where I in peace shall sleep.
As I've done each earthly task;
And have the path of life to tread.
Why give me flowers when I'm dead?

The House of Steel
My heart feels cold like the freezing steel.
And though my body is here, I don't feel real.
I need someone with a guiding wheel
To take me away from this house of steel
Oh tell me, please tell me I'm not made of steel.
Give me faith and love and warmth for my meal,
And normal human feelings, I want them, too.
Now, what more could you do?
My world has turned around.
I know not where I'm bound.
Oh please. guide me home.
After all, I'm human- I belong.
This plague of cold hides my face
And steals my heart without a trace.
Farewell and lock your door,
For I was the same as you before.

Inspiration
Inspiration
the surrounding world ceases-
and lightning strikes-
the writer has been inspired-
the ink begins to flow-
and swiftly travels the hand,
yet, too flow for the writer's mind.
Then-
there is a pause...
perhaps,
a pause-
to dwell,
or to rearrange,
or to struggle to continue-
and at the worst time possible-
there comes a mental block...
Frustration sets in-
hair feels a tight grip which threatens
to rid of its existence-
the writer's face grimaces with pain
while classmates stare in recoiling horror...
And again the ink begins to flow,
and swiftly travels the hand,
yet too slow for the writer's mind...
the writer has been inspired.

The Square
There was a place where the backs of four tall buildings came together and formed a large square. No windows looked down on the square because there were only elevators on the backs of the buildings. Only one tiny winding alley led to the square. When Jeff was a small boy, he found the square which contained twelve small trees, grass, bushes, and flowers. He cared for the place until it looked like a garden. Jeff went to the square almost every day while he was in school and even after he started working. When Jeff was 27, the government decreed that everything could be made synthetically. Jeff was now very careful when he went to the square. Soon he noticed that many small birds were coming to the square and he found a puppy and a kitten in the alley. He took care of them all. About six months later, there was an announcement that all life besides man had been destroyed, so all that was left was in the square. One evening, while Jeff was feeding the animals, he heard someone shout, "Here he is!" Jeff grabbed his laser pistol and fired. The man in the alley fell; someone grabbed him and hurried away. Everything was quiet for a few minutes; then Jeff heard footsteps in the alley. They exchanged fire. When he felt a searing pain across his leg, Jeff dropped the pistol and fell clutching his leg. The police rushed in and handcuffed him. The animals were quickly killed. The square was sprayed with chemicals and set on fire. Jeff was screaming "No! NO! STOP!" but the roar of the blaze drowned his (paper damaged here) e. It was all over in about a minute. The police removed the handcuffs and shoved Jeff to the ground and left. It was dark, he could feel the warm blood flowing down his leg and wher (paper damaged here) looked up he could see no stars for the smoke.

Night Sky
Darkness, black nothingness,
Stillness except for an occasional
Flicker of a clear light--
Eyes gaze on the forever endless
Silence of the universe.
Minds wander to the stars,
Dreaming dreams of other
Planets and other people.

The Princess
The Princess' life was second-rate
Because she could not find a mate.
Yet all the kings and knights in armor
Regarded her as quite a charmer.
She strolled around the great big palace
And looked for villains plotting malice,
When suddenly a man appeared
Why sky-blue eyes and well-trimmed beard.
His face was young and full of life.
He asked if she would be his wife.
The princess stiffened for awhile
And then she gave a charming smile.
His blunt approach had come on strong,
But seemed sincere and hardly wrong.
She walked beside him down the road
And listened to the tales he told
Of saving girls and fighting dragons
And robbing rich men's noble wagons
They walked together for many hours;
Then cupid worked up all his powers.
He aimed his bow, let loose the string
And hoards of bells began to ring.
Their hearts were filled with joy and laughter
And now live happily ever after.

Color My World
If a third world
were to enter, let
it be mine, no
creed or color.
Love, peace and happiness
to always shine.
The wars of race
that diminish
mankind would never
reign again in my
land. Walking and working
together, our
special Utopian society would have
no one person the high and mighty.
But I might as well
dream of owning this
world. Because it's
impossible for me to
"color my world".
Paul Mims
The Snake
Slyly slithering through the thickets of the soul,
spitting and spreading the spiteful venom of hatred and contempt;
poisoning the thoughts of the being,
encouraging violent vengeance and bloating with selfish pride;
oh, to leash this terrible reptile within us all,
is the challenge of the surpassing life.
