Ansel Hawkins Named Alumnus Of Year
The Alumni Council chose Mr. Ansel Hawkins as the first recipient of the Alumnus of the Year Award. The award was presented to Mr. Hawkins at the annual alumni meeting on April 22.
Mr. Hawkins attended North Greenville Academy between 1912 and 1916. After graduation he taught school for one year before continuing his education at the University of South Carolina. After study there, he took the bar examination and became a lawyer. For more than forty years er has practiced law in the city of Greer. During this time he has done most of the legal work for the college without charge.
Mr. Hawkins served two years in the army during World War I, and saw duty in France. he served for ten years as representative from Greenville County in the state legislature. He served as chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Greenville County.
During his entire life, Mr. Hawkins has been active not only in civic matters but also in his church. He has taught Sunday school for many years, and has used his life to bless ohers.
When the plaque was presented to Mr. Hawkins, his words of response left no doubt in the minds of those present that the council had chosen the proper man for this award. Mr. Hawkins exemplifies the true spirit of North Greenville, one of loyalty to God and fellow men, and humility of attitude.
The guide used by the Alumni Council in selecting the Alumnus of the year reads as follows:
"This award is given to an outstanding graduate of North Greenville Academy or Junior College for sustaining faith in and loyalty to God, as manifested by his achievements and influence among his fellowmen in accordance with the spirit of North Greenville."
