Bottle Dealers Swap ‘N’ Sell At Greer

The bottle sale proved to be a magnet for many collectors with unusual hobbies. L.C. Pearson of Greer showed up with his astounding collections of checks - all for one cent - from both famous personalities and ordinary people. “I just collect checks instead of autographs,” he said.
Among the “famous” category were Oral Roberts, Nancy Thurmond and Eva Adams, director of the United States Mint.
“One of my favorites is from a chiropractor named Achenback (Aching-back),” he said. Each check was accompanied by an appropriate illustration of the name of the donor. In the case of the chiropractor, it was a man receiving a painful massage.
Person* has gone about his hobby by categorizing many of the unusual names he has found. “I started a Bible category,” he said, “With surnames like Joseph, Andrew, Church and Angel.”
He also began a section with persons over 100 years old “and I have a ‘friends’ category for just anybody,” he said.
Person* said that Mickey Mantle once sent him for a check. “But it was for a dollar and I didn’t really want it,” he said.
South, East and West are three more unusual surnames, but Pearson is still hunting for a “North” to complete the set.

I just learned of this man’s very unusual hobby, that of collecting personal checks for One Cent. Since the check would never be cashed, it will cost you practically nothing to further this man’s hobby. Won’t you help?

Cent checks prove joy to collector
L.C. Pearson of Greer, S.C., is a checkophile with an unusual speciality: He collects one-cent checks. (The value of the Pearson collection recently climbed past the $5 level!)
Pearson is not interested in getting rich, however, and doesn’t have to keep his checks in a safe deposit vault. He has fun collecting and some interesting checks to show for his efforts. And hoarding paper “pennies” at least does not displease the Director of the Mint.
The South Carolina retiree collects his checks in a number of topical categories. One of these is colors, and he has checks signed by Messrs, Black, White, Brown, Grey and many others. There is also an animal category, among which names like Fox, Wolf, Bull, Pig, and Coon appear.
He has Easts, Souths and Wests categorized, as well as persons with various “plant” names and humorous ones, such as Dr. Achenbach, the chiropractor and the lady Nesta Bird, whose brother’s name is Dickie. Other categories include checks signed by famous people, congressmen, show stars, athletes, governors and others.
One-cent check collecting can be exciting, too, as Pearson found out when he addressed a letter seeking a check to Arthur Brimer, the attempted assassin of Gov. Goerge* Wallace. This soon made him a subject for an FBI investigation.

Our South Carolina friend and member, L.C. Pearson of Box 453, Greer, South Carolina 29651, has asked us to remind you again about his hobby of collecting one cent checks from people with interesting names like Wolff, Rose, Swan, etc. He has notcied* in our director the names Pockett, Doe, Smell, Hand, Dunn, Elder, Hill, and Wolff whose checks he’d like to add to his collection. If any of you would like to add to L.C.’s pleasure by sending him your check for one cent he guarantees it will never be cashed.
