Mrs. Beacham Is Hostess To Organization
Greer Music Club Presents Program Of Unusual Interest. Miss Major and Miss Dickson Are Heard
Miss Vivian Major, pianist, and Miss Ivah Dickson, soprano, were presented here yesterday afternoon at the New Year meeting of the Crescent Music Club in a program that gave great pleasure to those who enjoyed the occasion at the home of Mrs. John L. Newman on McDaniel avenue with her daughter, Mrs. Eugene Beacham, as hostess. The program had been arranged by the Greer Music Club, of which Mrs. Paul Bull is president, and it was one of the most delightful which has been enjoyed this season.
Mrs. Bull was introduced by Mrs. John D. Davenport, program chairman of the Crescent club, and she then presented Mrs. J. S. Paget, vice president of the Greer club, who was in charge of the afternoon’s program.
Miss Major opened the program, playing the Bach “Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue.” An interesting work, with a title which has never been very successfully explained, the number quickly established the pianist as a most gifted young artist. Miss Major, a senior at Winthrop college, was awarded the Chimes scholarship this year– given to the top ranking senior music student. For the past three summers she has studied with Edwin Hughes in New York. She is now serving her fourth year as accompanist for Arthur Kraft, who is voice instructor at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
Miss Major is the only student that has been asked to give a recital in the large auditorium of the Music Conservatory at Winthrop.
Miss Major also closed yesterday afternoon’s program playing two Intermezzi from Op. 119 of Brahms and the famous Rhapsodie in E flat, also by Brahms. As an encore she played Liszt’s “Cantique D’Amour.” It is interesting to know that Miss Major last year entered the Columbia Music Festival with 27 other entrants and was one of the final four chosen to play before Mma. Lotte Lehman.
Miss Dickson, a graduate of Furman University School of Music, is director of the choral department of Greer high school, and a valued member of the Greer Music club. Miss Dickson has done graduate work at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and is an accomplished musician, being both a singer and a pianist. Yesterday afternoon she sang two numbers, “O Lovely Night” by Landon Ronald, and “Nightingale Song” by Nevin. She was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Arnold E. Putman.
Assisting Mrs. Beacham in entertaining yesterday weer Mrs. Milton G. Smith, chairman of hostesses, Mrs. Hattie D. Hardy, Mrs. Mattie D. Kendrick, Miss June Heffron, Mrs. William T. Poole, Mrs. Clyde Balyo, Mrs. J. M. Burnett, and Mrs. J. L. Camp.
Mrs. H. J. Alfred presided over the meeting which opened with the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner,” after which prayer for victory and peace was offered by Mrs. Smith. Miss Margaret Spencer, defense chairman, announced that the club sent 31 warm and useful garment to the New York office of-
